Powering Infinite Fleet with Holepunch’s Hyperdrive Technology
Exordium and Pixelmatic are dedicated to delivering a seamless, powerful, and immersive experience for all Infinite Fleet players. We’re excited to announce an innovative new update to our game launcher. Using Holepunch’s groundbreaking peer-to-peer (P2P) technology called Hyperdrive, we’ve changed the way users can download the Infinite Fleet game client. We’ve integrated Hyperdrive’s cutting-edge capabilities for seeding and downloading, providing users with a more robust and efficient experience for game updates and downloads.
Why Hyperdrive? The decision to integrate Holepunch’s Hyperdrive technology into Infinite Fleet was an easy one. Hyperdrive is a secure, real-time distributed file system designed for easy P2P file sharing. Unlike traditional centralized server models, Hyperdrive uses P2P to distribute data more efficiently, making downloads faster, minimizing latency, and creating an overall smoother user experience.
In Infinite Fleet, the core of the game is our Directed Narrative where we require many updates and operational changes based on player actions. As such, we often require many updates to the game client, which means that players would need to re-download the entire game, which is roughly 3 GB. By integrating Hyperdrive, we have a new architecture where players can simply download new files and components that we’ve updated, and directly from their peers. This reduces overall bandwidth usage for the players, and also decreases server costs for Exordium.
We’d like to extend a huge thanks to Paolo Ardoino, Mathias Buus, and the entire Holepunch team for creating and releasing this technology as completely open source. Their dedication to innovation mirrors our own, and successfully implementing Hyperdrive is a game changer.
